In an emergency

• Police and Fire: 10111
• Medical: 10177
• From mobile: 112

It is important to know local emergency numbers for your own area as well. Memorise these and make sure your children know what to do and whom to call in an emergency as well.

During January to March 2005, The Child Accident Prevention Foundation trained sixty-two principles, pre-school educators and trainers from various educare centres, crèches and the early childhood development sector in the Cape Peninsula.

The Safety in Day Care Settings Course included the following modules:

  • Developmental stages of children vs. injury.
  • Background and information in the prevention of unintentional injuries.
  • Safety principles in day care settings.
  • Compiling a Health and Safety Plan and Programme.
  • Emergency Care (First Aid).
  • Identifying, reporting and preventing child abuse and neglect.

The course runs for 20 hours.

CAPFSA made use of other specialists in the injury prevention to assist with specific modules in the training course.

These trainers who assisted were: Emergency Services (Fire and Life Safety), Medical Education Centre, and RAPCAN (Resources Aimed at the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect).

CAPFSA would like to thank the Social Development Directorate of the City of Cape Town for making funding available to run this essential safety course.
