Online Editorial

Every year accidents happen to children as well as adults because of the misuse of fireworks. It is therefore important to fully realise the dangers associated with fireworks. The Child Accident Prevention Foundation urges parents to make sure children do not play with fireworks.

Please bear the following safety tips in mind:

The Act on explosives states that no person shall allow or permit a child under the age of 16 years to handle or use fireworks except under the supervision of an adult person. No retail dealer or individual is allowed to sell fireworks to a child under the apparent age of 16 years.

  • Instructions provided with each firework should be followed carefully. Do not assume that the instructions on fireworks are all the same.
  • Never throw fireworks or lighted crackers.
  • Always keep fireworks at arms length, away from the body before lighting the fuse.
  • Always stand well back.
  • Never return to fireworks once lit – it may go off in your face.
  • Do not carry fireworks around in your pockets; keep them in the original package until ready for use.
  • Always give fireworks plenty of room, do not put them in tins, glass jars or bottles.
  • Light crackers in an open space; never use them inside a house.
  • Be considerate. Do not endanger other members of the public.
  • Always keep pets inside when using fireworks.
  • Let elders handle fireworks, youngsters can watch from a safe distance.
  • Never fool around with firecrackers. Serious injury can result from throwing fireworks.
  • Fireworks are banned in public open spaces. The City Council can be contacted to find out where fireworks can be set off.

REMEMBER FIREWORKS ARE NOT TOYS!
