CAPWEEK FEEDBACK - CAPE TOWN (13 - 17 AUGUST 2001)

National Child Accident Prevention Week (Capweek) is an annual initiative of the Child Accident Prevention Foundation. This week aims to increase the awareness and understanding of children’s accidents. With this week CAPFSA reminded people that childhood injuries are preventable and that keeping children safe is not just about “good luck”.

CAPWEEK furthermore aims to:
Provide clear and accurate safety information to the public.
Encourage local communities to take part in child safety activities
Encourage the media to provide positive coverage of child injury prevention and safety issues.

The following units and organisations joined hands with CAPFSA in Cape Town this year:

  • Department of Transport
  • Disaster Management
  • ESKOM
  • RAPCAN - Resources Aimed at Child Abuse and Neglect
  • PASASA - Paraffin Safety Association
  • Johnson & Johnson
  • 107 Public Emergency Communication Centre
  • Cape Town Fire and Emergency Services (Ottery).

This collaboration was essential for an effective programme to be initiated and implemented during the week.

CAPFSA and the above partners had the following activities during the Week:

LAUNCH 13 AUGUST Red Cross Childrens Hospital

Dr. Wayne Smith of the Medical Emergency Services did the opening of CAPWEEK. Dr Norman Maharaj, Chief Director of Groote Schuur and Red Cross Childrens Hospital also addressed the audience. Dr. Maharaj stated "We are not aggressive enough in South Africa about preventing accidents." He furthermore said, "We must lay the blame on those who are responsible when children suffer unnecessarily."

Activity with Patients of Red Cross Childrens Hospital

As tradition dictates, CAPFSA arranged a special event for the in-patients of the Red Cross Childrens Hospital. On Monday 13 August the following mascots Wally (107 office), Sassy (PASASA), Glowie (ESKOM) and Danny Cat (Dept. of Traffic Safety) assisted CAPFSA staff and the hospital PRO (Dianna Ross) in distributing activity packs and balloons to the patients. The activity packs contained a party pack (sponsored by CAPFSA) and promotional items sponsored by ESKOM, Dept. of Traffic Safety, PASASA and the 107 (Emergency Number Office). This activity was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone especially the fire fighters from the Fire & Life Safety Programme who volunteered their assistance in handing out the activity packs.

Safety Exhibitions At Hospitals

During CAPWEEK child safety exhibitions were held at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH)(Hospital Lane) and Red Cross Children's Hospital (main foyer).

Rukeya Abdroef, a dedicated volunteer, manned the GSH exhibition. Rukeya enjoyed interacting with staff and visitors to the hospital who frequented the exhibition during that week. She handed out CAPFSA information leaflets, paraffin safety caps, Savlon antiseptic lotion and lollipops. Visitors to the stand also had the opportunity to fill in a lucky draw competition for a (Junior 2- in 1 Travel Safe) car seat sponsored by Travel Safe (PTY) Ltd.

At the Red Cross Childrens Hospital a general safety exhibition was displayed in the main foyer and in the new out- patients waiting area. Safety leaflets and pedestrian safety booklets were available to the public. Artwork done by students from the hospital school and Therapeutic Learning Centre was also displayed in the foyer for everyone to view.
